I am sure; you do not want to be the tailender. You don’t want to start your career with a compromise. The first starting job decides the direction of your entire career path.
Here are some tips “How to prepare for campus placements engineering”
It is good to start doing your homework right now. College life comes with a lot of independence, make good use of it.
Discovering your true potential and the best fit in a career goes a long way; it gives you immense satisfaction that you have spent the first 16 years of education in the right direction.
As a responsible engineering student, you must continuously work on your problem-solving and critical thinking skills. The IT industry today requires an enormous number of problem solvers, and these skills are not taught in the classroom. You must hone them before time flies.
The following 5 reasons you should be careful while sitting for campus placements
1. Not meeting the eligibility criteria.
It is the foremost thing that you must be aware of and all the basics related to your campus placements preparation should be up to the mark.
Many companies do not accept the applications to participate in the process if your aggregate is less than 60% or 6 CPGA and you should not be having any backlogs before the end of IIIrd year. Few elite companies do have their cut-off above 8 CGPA.
You got it right. You just cannot only enjoy your college life by indulging in sports, cultural events, hangouts with friends, and festivals only. You must do the hardship now to enjoy your corporate life later.
You need to attend your classes, take projects seriously, skill development in a real sense and have a decent CGPA to qualify to sit for campus placement.
2. Underestimating the technical test.
Once you know which company is coming to your campus for participating in campus placements and you are eligible to apply, the first obstacle is to attempt and clear the technical test.
The test may vary based on the profiles you are applying for, but there are a few tests specific to engineering campus drives.
Nowadays common online tests are related to coding, quantitative, logical & reasoning, verbal ability, and sometimes include critical thinking skills.
Mind you, companies are here to select you and not to eliminate you from the rounds. The expectations from the test are to check your subject fundamentals and your approach to solving problems.
The companies will have sectional cut-offs and they will decide how many students they want to interview from that test. From my experience on an average from any test, only 20-30 percent of the students qualify for the interview rounds.
As a student your key responsibility is to make use of your Ist three years in upgrading your skills, your subject fundamentals should be strong, and you should also focus on quantitative, logical, and reasoning aspects.
3. Not able to showcase technical knowledge during the Interview:
The prospective employer would like to check in your knowledge related to the subject you are studying, and other important technical skills & domain expertise that will be related to your profession.
In this round, you will be judged on your subject knowledge, confidence, and abilities to perform different tasks. If you have done internships, or have worked on real industry projects, it will really help you to do well during the technical interview.
Sometimes what happens, you know everything & you have contributed to your projects also, but you are not able to communicate well.
You need to present your facts and thought process in front of the interviewer without any uncertainty or doubts. How are you going to do it?
If your English-speaking skills are not strong then you need to start working on your communication skills from today itself.
You should read a lot, whether it’s an online blog, news, articles, storybooks. And side by side start conversing in English with your friends. You must participate in quizzes, cases studies, class presentations to overcome any public speaking fear you might have. You can do mock interviews with your set of friends and this preparation will really help to sail through real interview smoothly.
4. Think too little of HR Round
Everyone has heard of HR interview, and you normally face it when you qualify the technical interview? So, what exactly are they going to ask during the HR interview? Are they interested in your family background, your home location, and your siblings? No, not at all.
They are only interested in you and now they are trying to delve more on your behavioural side to know whether you are a right cultural fit for them or not.
They need to comprehend now whether you have willingness to learn new skills, unlearn obsolete technologies, what are your interests, and your temperament with peer group.
Use this interview as an opportunity to demonstrate to them how you stand out from the competition? Ask some relevant questions about the company; discuss some facts which you have researched about them. This is the time to showcase your right attitude and confirming it again that they have made the right choice by short listing you for the role.
5. Not making efforts to build impressive resume.
A resume is a powerful tool, as it does first-level marketing for you. It acts as a bridge between you and your prospective employer. You need to make your resume very strategically by sharing the right information which creates some excitement in the mind of the interviewer.
Many a time, few companies put up a criterion of shortlisting through resume instead of going for an online test or any CGPA criteria. There are many reasons behind this, sometimes it is related to the recruitment budget or shortage of time.
You are an engineer in the making and you will be creating the future but today you need to knock through the door of the opportunities and your resume has to magnetize you.
It is very important to mention your key skills according to the requirement of the job profile you have applied. You should be able to justify every line written on your resume during the interview. Never mention something just to impress the interviewer.
You can include relevant engineering project-work and class projects that demonstrate your engineering abilities and skill sets. Always remember that having an excellent resume is a must but you need walk the talk. What you write must be able to express during the interview.
Conclusion:
These pitfalls are very common during campus placements, and we see many potential students falling for it. Your preparation for a good campus placement should start as soon you enter the college.
